How To Put an End To Foot & Ankle Pain
Foot and ankle pain often results from injury, overuse, or conditions like plantar fasciitis, arthritis, and tendonitis. Symptoms include pain, swelling, stiffness, and difficulty with mobility, impacting daily activities.
At Ultimate Stability Physiotherapy, treatment begins with a thorough assessment to identify the root cause. A personalised plan is developed, incorporating hands-on therapy, strengthening exercises, and patient education. By addressing biomechanics and muscle imbalances, the goal is to relieve pain, restore function, and promote long-term foot health.
What Is Foot & Ankle Pain?
The foot is a highly complex part of our anatomy. It consists of 26 bones, 33 joints and many muscles that stabilise and move this complex area. The foot is our first interface with the ground when we’re standing and walking.
In spite of all this, the foot is often overlooked and neglected. For most of the day the foot will be trapped in shoes that are often restrictive and hinder the foot moving
naturally and the muscles engage. Ultimately this can lead to a stiff, unstable and weak foot.
The most common causes of foot and ankle pain are often related to injury, overuse, or underlying medical conditions. These include:
Sprains and strains: Damage to ligaments or muscles, often caused by twisting or sudden movements.
Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the tissue connecting the heel to the toes, leading to heel pain, especially in the morning.
Arthritis: Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis can affect joints in the foot and ankle, causing stiffness and pain.
Achilles Tendonitis: Overuse or tight calf muscles can strain the Achilles tendon, leading to pain and inflammation.
What are the symptoms of Foot & Ankle Pain?
Symptoms of foot and ankle conditions can manifest in various ways, often depending on the underlying cause. Common symptoms can include sharp or dull pain, swelling, stiffness, redness, or tenderness in the affected area. Other clear signs that your pain won’t go away on its own might include difficulty bearing weight or a decreased range of motion. Numbness or tingling may also occur, particularly if nerve involvement is present.
Foot and ankle pain can significantly impact daily life by limiting mobility, reducing physical activity, and affecting tasks like walking, climbing stairs, or even standing for extended periods. Over time, this may lead to muscle weakness or balance problems – further hindering independence and quality of life.
If your foot and ankle pain persists for longer than a week, it’s unlikely to go away on its own therefore you should seek the assistance of an experienced physiotherapist to diagnose the source of the problem and recommend appropriate treatment.
